World premiere of the Yakutian film Nuuccha to take place at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

Nuuccha (meaning "the Russian" in the Yakutian language), a film by the Yakutian director Vladimir Munkuev, has been selected for the East of the West Competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which will be taking place between 20 and 28 August. The Karlovy Vary Festival is the most important event in the film calendar in Central and Eastern Europe. Its competition lineup includes 12 films, just one of which is from Russia. The film's producers are Boris Khlebnikov, Alexander Plotnikov, Evgeniy Nikishov, Valeriy Fedorovich, Albert Ryabishev, and Andrey Ushatskiy.

Nuuccha is a psychological drama based on the works of the Polish writer and ethnographer Wacław Sieroszewski. In late nineteenth-century Yakutia, Habji and his wife Keremes have just buried their second child, and are preparing for a harsh winter of famine. Instead of giving them the help he promised, the local prince foists a Russian convict, Kostya, on the family, who the law decrees must live in the same house as them. They initially struggle to find a common language, and the convict soon decides that he will be the master of the house from now on.

"When I first read Wacław Sieroszewski, I noticed that his work is more literary and artistic than ethnographic," says the film's director and screenwriter Vladimir Munkuev. "Yes, it's a description of a small indigenous nation somewhere in deepest Siberia, but Sieroszewski's main focus is actually on people's characters and conflicts, their experiences and relationships. This is a film about a man who wanted to help others, but in fact made the situation worse, becoming an aggressor. My main objective in this film was to highlight just how ambiguous all the characters are."

The film was screened at the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event in Tallinn, winning the Post Production Awards category of the Work in Progress Awards, which go to projects with a particularly powerful and daring artistic vision that successfully combine creative and commercial potential.
